Road closed after banana lorry overturns

From the archive, first published Monday 9th Jul 2007.

A BUSY Hampshire road was closed this morning after an articulated lorry carrying bananas overturned.

The 40-tonne vehicle flipped on to its side on the A36 sliproad at the Ower roundabout near junction 2 of the M27 shortly before 11am, forcing the closure of both northbound lanes and the hard shoulder.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was dispatched although the lorry driver, a 49-year-old man from Bolton, was not injured in the crash.

A police spokeswoman warned that the road would take up to three hours to clear and could cause congestion for local traffic.
